Our 2025 Festival Plein Air competition returns to Mathews!

For the third year, the Plein Air Invitational is partnering with the Mathews County Bay School Community Arts Center for a one-day event in Mathews. The 2025 Plein Air Artists will be painting at various locations in Mathews County. Watch the artists at work during the day and then join us at the Bay School at 5pm for a reception. Paintings done that day will be available for purchase during the reception. See if you can determine Best in Show and which artist receives the prize money! This event is free and open to the public.

9am - 3pm ~ Paint Out (various locations)

5pm - 7pm ~ Paintings will be able to be viewed and purchased (and taken home that evening!)

Bay School Community Arts Center

The Bay School Community Arts Center is a non-profit art gallery in Mathews, Virginia, on the Chesapeake Bay. 

The Bay School annually offers more than 100 art classes in a wide range of media, conducts arts outreach programming with many community partners, hosts the Clay by the Bay Ceramics Guild, and showcases the best of local, regional, and Virginia fine art and craft in the Art Speaks Gallery.

The Bay School is a member of the Made in Mathews Open Studio Tour, the River to Bay Artisan Trail, the Mathews County Coalition 4 Kids, the Mathews Main Street Committee, and the Gloucester County Chamber of Commerce.
