Celebrating its 12th year making music accessible to everyone!
The Cook Foundation presents the Symphony under the Stars FREE Family Concert. The concert will be given by the Virginia Symphony orchestra conducted by Erin Freeman. This is the 12th year that the Cook Foundation has been making music accessible to everyone. Touted as one of the most anticipated events of the year in the community, it is expected to draw over 2,000 people to the Gloucester Village for an evening of great food and music.
The public is encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket. Dine on Main Street before the concert and receive 10% off at Bangkok Noi, LuLu Birds Kitchen, Olivia’s in the Village, Patriots Grille and Sweet Tooth Café & Bakery. Picnics are welcome too and you can also dine on site with Good Life Kitchen and Boy Scout Troop 111. If you wish to purchase and pick up a picnic basket to take to the concert, Good Life Kitchen will be offering some symphony specials.
Road closures will be in effect on Main Street between Belroi Rd. (at Church of St. Therese) and Newington Baptist Church between the hours of 6:30PM and 10:00PM to facilitate the concert. General parking will be available along Main Street, in the back lots of Newington Baptist Church and in Gloucester County Government parking lots. Special needs parking will be available at Newington Baptist Church & Church of St. Therese by permit only.
In the event of forecasted rain, the concert will be held at LightHouse on Route 17.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I park?
General parking is available along Main Street, at the County buildings at Justice Drive, behind Suntrust Bank, at Botetourt Elementary School, and in the lower lots of Newington Baptist Church.
Do you have disabled parking available?
Yes! For those with a placard hanging in their car or DMV issued disabled license plate, you may park at Church of St. Therese as well as the upper lots at Newington Baptist Church. If you do not have either of these but have a parking hardship for someone in your party, please call our office and we’ll do our best to accommodate that member of your party.
Will there by food for sale or can we bring a picnic?
Food will be available for sale by our local Boy Scout Troop 111 but you may bring a picnic on site. We heavily encourage those attending to enjoy dining at one of our local Main Street restaurants prior to attending the concert. Many offer a 10% discount if you mention you are attending the concert.
What time will the road close?
The road closure begins at 6:30PM and will not reopen until 10PM. The road is closed on Main Street between Newington Baptist Church and Belroi Road. This ensures safe arrival of our guests.
Can I come early and pick out where I’d like to sit?
The concert is general seating and is on a grassy lot. You may arrive early and set up chairs or tables. However, we cannot guarantee any personal items left on the property or that no one would move or remove them. Please bring lawn chairs or blankets. We do allow tables for food set-up but respectfully ask that you take them down once the concert has begun if they are blocking anyone’s view of the stage.
Are dogs allowed at the event?
We love dogs and as long as your dog plays well with others (humans and other dogs) we welcome your four legged family member on a leash.
If rain is forecasted, will the concert be cancelled?
If rain is in the forecast, we make a decision the day before whether to move it inside or not. If the concert is moved inside, it will take place at Lighthouse Worship Center located at 4299 George Washington Memorial Highway, Hayes, VA 23072. Start time will remain the same and doors will open 1 hour prior to the concert (7PM). Food will not be allowed to be brought in but we will still have food on site for sale by Boy Scout Troop 111. We welcome you to dine on Main Street prior to the concert and receive 10% off at many participating downtown restaurants.
May I take photos or video of the concert?
At the request of the Virginia Symphony, photography or video of the performance is not allowed but have fun and take pictures and video of you and your friends prior to the concert having a great time and #gloucestervaarts in all your social media.
